Stephenie Meyer Makes Forbes List of 10 Most Powerful Women Authors

June 9, 2011

Today, Forbes named Stephenie Meyer one of the world’s 10 most powerful living women fiction authors, describing her as follows:

“Best-known for her vampire romance series Twilight, Stephenie Meyer has quickly become one of the best-selling women authors of all-time, gaining worldwide recognition with stories that tap into readers’ romantic dreams and explore themes of immortality and sacrifice.”

While I entirely agree with their assessment of the Twilight saga as “vampire romance,” I am less in agreement with the claim the series is mainly about “themes of immortality and sacrifice.” I would argue the saga is more concerned with immortality as it relates to UNDYING LOVE and about  sacrifice FOR  LOVE rather than sacrifice in general.

Granted, each of the ten authors only garners a small blurb summarizing their work and impact, but I think the words “immortality” and “sacrifice” are not well-chosen… What do you all think?

I would even go so far as to say that the saga’s end point is the eternal family, composed of (white) husband, wife, child(ren) and the right choices in love, even if it involves sacrifice, is how you get there. That’s how I see it. :-\
