Thoughts on the Breaking Dawn Teaser Poster

May 25, 2011

Hmmm, is that red glow in the sky supposed to hint at all the red that will be spouting from Bella’s belly in the horrific birth scene?

Are the pointy trees supposed to be phallic? Is Bella the empty, blank slate sky being encroached upon (penetrated) by a phallic tree pack? (I think Edward is the tree on the far right.)

Is the focus on the sky supposed to make us think of heaven? Of the “happily ever after” in the celestial kingdom?
Do the hints of purple symbolize Bella’s “decorations” (ie bruises from Edward)?

Is it lighter at the bottom and darker at the top to echo the threatening approach of the Volturi?

Is it somehow a reminder to embrace abstinence? Ie, with no hot werewolves, vampires, or humans, the poster gives us nothing to lust after…

I think it’s a safe image.  A rather blank one. A hallmark card type of thing. It’s lazy and uninspired. It’s teasing us by giving us nothing – kind of like Edward in all those premarital abstinence porn scenes. At least he gave some kisses though. This poster gives squat.

Judging by the comment thread at The Twilight Lexicon, many others share my disappointment.

Lame, lame, lame. They were doing so much of a fuss over this and they gave us, “generic down on a forest” Why summit keeps hiring boring unimaginative people to do the posters? Really Eclipse poster was so boring that fandom had to improve them. I really hope the MTV movie awards preview blows our minds, because this is just lameful

      Ana,
I agree. They are making bank on the franchise and this is what we get as a teaser? Blah!

Didn’t the first “Eclipse” poster look similarly dull as heck? Summit is the worst tease in Gollywood. The next thing you know, they’ll be pouring merchandise over us as if it was manna from heaven.

As a science person, I would like to make one comment on the poster. If that is dawn breaking over the trees, considering that the sky is various shades of red, this would signify that a storm is brewing for the day. Remember the old saw? “Red sky in morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors’ delight.” It’s true. So perhaps that’s what it is trying to signify.

      Lin,
Good points about the pending storm! I think more red is needed given the storms brewing in the final text though…

I read an article about how The Fast and The Furious was marketed using, among other things, billboards featuring just a hub cap. The idea was that it would remind viewers of the more detailed commercials. I think this is similar, it gives us familiar trees of the forest and reminds us of Twilight. I think the lack of obvious center of attention is meant to build anticipation, you want to see more.

As to why a pretty sunset instead of La Push or a fawn or some other visually appealing sight that appeared in one of the earlier movies, I’m guessing it’s because (aside from the name Breaking Dawn) once Bella is transformed, the sky’s the limit. In the first movie, there’s the spider monkey scene where Edward takes her through the tree tops, perhaps the very same we see here. A sunset is contemplative, it’s something a lot of people mean to take the time to appreciate. Now you can stare at this poster and think about how you enjoyed the other movies and cultivate an intention to see this one when it comes out.

That said, I also wish it had an actor or three pictured. But as the date gets closer we’ll see a few of those released.

      KJ,
I like your point that for Bella “the sky’s the limit” once she becomes a vampire. It would seem so, but yet the saga doesn’t letter her reach for the stars does it? Instead of ending with the suggestion she is going to go on to be a vampire extraordinaire, she is framed as the ultimate vampire housewife… What do you think?
